General Information

Bellevue College received accreditation from the Northwest Commission for Colleges and Universities for its new Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in September 2016. Accreditation of this new computer science program not only makes Bellevue College the first of Washington State’s community and technical colleges to offer a traditional, four-year Bachelor of Science degree, but also provides students within the region an additional program in which to earn a computer science degree. In recent years, student demand for computer science degrees has far exceeded the available spots at colleges and universities within the state. Bellevue’s program adds additional student capacity and helps provide industry with much needed computer science knowledge and skills. Bellevue College enrolled students into this BS degree program in Winter 2017.

Vision

Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) in Computer Science from Bellevue College will prepare graduates to apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the design of computer and software based systems of varying complexity.

Mission

Mission In concert with Bellevue College’s mission, the bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is a student-centered program, committed to teaching excellence and life-long learning. The program seeks to foster intellectual and professional development, problem solving skills and analytical reasoning so that students contribute to the vibrancy of our region, promote inclusion and global awareness and perform effectively in a dynamic and ever-changing work environment.

Educational Goals and Objectives

The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science prepares graduates to:

• Work in industry, government, or academic positions, contributing significantly to the design and development of software and computer systems.
• Act as an effective team member.
• Undertake positions of leadership in the computer and software development.
• Commence advanced study of computing, science, engineering and other professional fields.

Upon graduation, graduates will demonstrate:

• Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of mathematics to develop and analyze computing systems.
• Demonstrate the conceptual knowledge to identify and analyze a problem, and then define the computing requirements to creatively solve it.
• Demonstrate the ability to design, implement, evaluate, trouble-shoot and test a computer-based system process, component, or program to meet desired results.
• Demonstrate the ability to use current techniques, skills, and tools for computing practice.
• Demonstrate success skills, including teamwork, leadership, communication, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, personal responsibility and management skills.
• Demonstrate an awareness of the impact of computers on society as well as an understanding of the key ethical issues shaping the practice of Computer Science.
